Where Does Rain, Snow, Sleet, and Hail Come From? 2nd Grade Science Edition Vol. 2
Rain is water that falls from clouds in the sky. Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets or ice crystals. When the water droplets or ice crystals become too heavy, they fall to the ground as rain.
There are many different types of rain, including:
- Drizzle: Light rain that falls in small drops.
- Showers: Short periods of heavy rain.
- Thunderstorms: Heavy rain that is accompanied by thunder and lightning.
- Acid rain: Rain that is acidic because it has picked up pollutants from the air.
Snow is frozen water that falls from clouds in the sky. Snowflakes are formed when water vapor in the air freezes around tiny particles of dust or pollen. As the snowflakes grow, they become too heavy to stay in the air and fall to the ground.

There are many different types of snow, including:
- Powder snow: Light and fluffy snow that is easy to ski on.
- Packed snow: Snow that has been compacted by wind or people.
- Ice pellets: Small, round pieces of ice that fall from clouds.
- Sleet: A mixture of rain and snow that falls from clouds.
Sleet is a mixture of rain and snow that falls from clouds. Sleet is formed when rain falls through a layer of cold air and freezes into ice pellets.
Hail is a type of precipitation that consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice. Hail is formed when raindrops are carried up into the cold upper atmosphere of a thunderstorm and freeze. The hailstones then grow as they are repeatedly carried up and down by the updrafts and downdrafts of the thunderstorm.
Hail can be very dangerous, especially if it is large. Hail can damage cars, homes, and crops. Hail can also be deadly if it hits someone in the head.
There are a few things you can do to stay safe from rain, snow, sleet, and hail:
- Stay indoors during storms. If you must go outside, wear a raincoat or umbrella.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you see hail, take cover in a sturdy building.
- Drive carefully in slippery conditions. Slow down and increase your following distance.
- Be prepared for power outages. Have a flashlight, radio, and extra batteries on hand.
