The Mythological Roots: The Story of Shani

According to Hindu mythology, Shani, also known as Saturn, is one of the nine planetary deities. He is associated with Saturday, the day of the week, and is considered the lord of justice, karma, and retribution. Shani is depicted riding a black raven or crow, with an arrow and bow in his hands, representing his swift and inevitable nature.

The story of Shani traces back to the ancient rivalry between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. When Shiva decapitated Brahma's fifth head, causing him to commit the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin),the severed head adhered to Shiva's hand. To rid himself of the curse associated with Brahmahatya, Shiva performs rigorous penance, during which Shani is born from Shiva's sweat.

The Six Horse Carriage: Shani's Unique Ride

Shani is unique among the planetary deities as he rides a chariot drawn by six black horses. These horses represent the various aspects of Shani's influence and the different ways in which he can impact human lives.

The six horses are named:

  • Mand (Slowness): Represents the slow and often imperceptible nature of Shani's influence.
  • Pingal (Yellow): Symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and material success.
  • Vishti (Horror): Embodies fear, illness, and misfortune.
  • Vajra (Thunderbolt): Represents power, authority, and determination.
  • Khalank (Silence): Denotes secrecy, isolation, and loneliness.
  • Maheswar (Shiva): Associated with Lord Shiva, signifies death, destruction, and transformation.

The Rituals and Observances of Six Horse Shani Night

The Six Horse Shani Night, also known as Shani Amavasya or Shani Jayanti, is a sacred night dedicated to worshipping Shani Dev. It occurs on the new moon night (Amavasya) in the month of Shravana (July-August).

On this night, devotees observe a number of rituals and practices to appease Shani and seek his blessings. These include:

  • Fasting: Devotees often fast for the entire day, breaking their fast only after offering prayers and rituals to Shani.
  • Offering Oil: Sesame oil is considered sacred to Shani Dev. Devotees offer oil to the idol or image of Shani, as well as to a representation of the six horses.
  • Lighting Diyas: Diyas (oil lamps) are lit as a symbol of offering light to Shani, illuminating his path and seeking his favor.
  • Chanting Mantras: Devotees chant mantras dedicated to Shani, such as "Om Shanaye Namah," to invoke his blessings and seek his protection.
  • Performing Homa: Homa, or fire rituals, are performed to offer specific offerings to Shani and to purify the atmosphere.
  • Donating Black Objects: Black is the color associated with Shani, and devotees donate black objects such as clothes, blankets, or food to the needy.

The Significance and Impact of Six Horse Shani Night

The Six Horse Shani Night holds great significance for devotees of Shani Dev and in Hindu culture as a whole. It is believed that performing rituals and worshiping Shani on this night can mitigate his negative influences and bring blessings and protection.

Shani's influence is often associated with challenges, setbacks, and obstacles. However, by honoring him on this special night, devotees believe they can appease his wrath and seek his favor. Shani is also seen as a fair and impartial judge, and worshiping him is believed to bring justice and restore balance in life.

: A Timeless Tradition of Faith and Devotion

The Six Horse Shani Night is a testament to the enduring power of Hindu mythology and folklore. It is a night where devotees come together to honor Shani Dev, seeking his blessings and protection. Through the rituals, offerings, and prayers that mark this special night, devotees express their faith and devotion, hoping to navigate life's challenges and find favor in the eyes of the cosmic judge.
