The Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed's Church
This poem is a dramatic monologue spoken by a dying bishop who is ordering his tomb. The bishop is a vain and ambitious man who is obsessed with his legacy. He wants his tomb to be a work of art that will ensure that he is remembered for centuries to come.
The poem is full of rich language and imagery. Browning uses vivid descriptions to create a sense of the bishop's wealth and power. The bishop's tomb is described as being "carved in marble, black and white," and "enamelled with gold." The bishop also speaks of the "priests in blue" who will chant at his funeral, and the "lords and ladies" who will come to mourn him.
Beneath the surface of the poem, however, there is a darker meaning. The bishop's obsession with his legacy is a sign of his own mortality. The tomb that he orders is a reminder that he will eventually die and be forgotten.
Robert Browning was a master of the dramatic monologue. His poems offer a profound insight into the human condition. This annotated edition of Browning's complete poetical works is an essential resource for anyone who wants to understand his work.
