Johnny Thunders: The Life and Legacy of a Punk Icon
Johnny Thunders was a guitarist, singer, and songwriter who was a key figure in the New York punk rock scene of the 1970s. He was a member of the New York Dolls and the Heartbreakers, and his solo career was marked by both commercial success and personal struggles.
Thunders was born John Anthony Genzale Jr. in Queens, New York, on July 15, 1952. He began playing guitar at a young age and was influenced by a wide range of music, including rock and roll, blues, and country. In the late 1960s, he joined the New York Dolls, one of the first punk rock bands. The Dolls were a critical and commercial success, but Thunders was fired from the band in 1975 due to his drug use.

After leaving the Dolls, Thunders formed the Heartbreakers with Richard Hell and Jerry Nolan. The Heartbreakers were also a critical and commercial success, but the band broke up in 1977 due to Thunders' drug use.
